Killarney is a tiny town that up until 40 years ago was only reachable by water, but has been rebuilt as a resort town. Killarney is built along a straight fjord-like cut, the Killarney Channel, between the mainland and St George's Island. The Killarney Mountain Lodge and the Sportsman Inn house the two major marinas in the town. There isn't a lot to the town that isn't on the waterfront - so much so that we were able to go shopping by dinghy to the liquor store and the general store.

The Mountain Lodge is built as the idealization of a mountain hunting lodge and has full resort amenities, including heated pool, multiple fine dining restaurants and sailboats and other watercraft for rent - all available even to marina guests! Of course, there are bears (and bear resistant trash containers - i.e., hard even for humans to figure out how to open) and snakes (both the water and land kind - we saw one of each).

Opposite the Sportsman Inn is a dock in front of a large screen where they show movies - first boat-in theater I've ever seen. Herbert's Fishery has the best fish and chips we'd had so far - they were serving perch the day we went.

Outside the channel to the west is a bay with stunning views of the surrounding La Cloche Mountains - where the stone tops make them appear snow-covered.

High civilization on the edge of the wilderness attracts a lot of guests in the high season, but by Monday morning, Labor Day - nearly everyone had cleared out leaving us one of the few left on the dock by the time we left late morning. The unofficial end of the summer and the season up here - they're only open for another few weeks. Time to move south!
